Bardfield Vineyard is part of the Great Lodge farming estate in North West Essex, with a walled garden, alpacas and a Grade I listed barn used for weddings.
Great Lodge is a farming estate in North West Essex that the same family has worked for generations. They were tenant farmers here at the end of the 19th century, and Rebecca's grandfather, Joseph Smith, bought the estate in the late 1940s. Her father, Alan Jordan, planted the Bardfield Vineyard in 1989 alongside the arable farm. The first vines were Bacchus, on sandy clay in the dry, sunny East Anglian climate. The vines are pruned by hand through the winter and picked by hand, usually at the end of September.
Cellar door tastings
Visitors can taste the wines in the vineyard shop before buying. Guided tours with a tasting in the Grade I listed barn run on set dates from May to September. Sheets for the self-guided trails are collected from the shop.
