South East · A county portrait

Vines where Kent’s orchards and hop gardens were.

Kent has more vineyard than any other county, almost double the area of West Sussex, the next, by WineGB’s 2025 industry report. Several of its vineyards stand on land that grew the fruit and hops the Garden of England was known for.

Champagne Taittinger’s Domaine Evremond, near Chilham — the first investment a Champagne house has made in the UK to produce quality sparkling wine — was planted from 2017 on Stone Stile Farm’s apple and pear orchards. The Cary family cleared an old cherry orchard at The Old Rectory, near Faversham, for 8,000 vines in 2020. At Penn Oast, at the foot of the North Downs, a family now grows grapes on land that grew hops, an opportunity it puts down to climate change; Mereworth made its winery in an oast that once dried hops, and Brenley grows its vines alongside apples, pears and hops.

The ground changes across the county. Chapel Down, outside Tenterden on the edge of the Weald, credits free-draining greensand; Gusbourne, at Appledore, plants Wealden clay and Tunbridge Wells sand; and around Canterbury and Faversham, Domaine Evremond, Chartham and The Old Rectory all grow on chalk.

Visit Kent and the county’s vineyards promote the estates together as the Kentish Wine Way. Chartham, three miles outside Canterbury, has a railway station about 50 metres from the farm.
