Vineyards and wineries in the East
England’s quiet vintage — still wines from London clay.
England’s quiet vintage — still wines from London clay.
The east is England’s sleeper. No chalk, no fanfare — just flat country, big skies, and London Clay that is quietly producing some of the most structured still Pinot Noir in Britain. The Crouch Valley in particular is what every wine writer has been pointing at for the past three years.
Essex alone now hosts more than 30 commercial vineyards, several supplying fruit to the headline estates further south. Suffolk and Norfolk are smaller-scale, more agricultural — vines tucked into the corners of farms that have always grown other things.
It is the easiest region for a day trip from London — Liverpool Street to most of these estates inside ninety minutes. Saturday lunch at West Street Vineyard, an afternoon at Crouch Valley, home for dinner.
