The Surrey Hills wine route, on the chalk of the North Downs.

Surrey’s vineyards set out to be visited together. In 2019 five of them — Albury, Chilworth Manor, Denbies, Greyfriars and High Clandon — launched Vineyards of the Surrey Hills as “a new English wine region”, with a map of routes for walkers, drivers and anyone arriving by train from London. Tanhurst and Soloms Court have since joined, and in 2026 the group held its first Surrey Hills Wine Week.

Denbies anchors it. Planted in 1986, it describes itself as England’s largest single-estate vineyard, with 265 acres under vine outside Dorking. Litmus Wines, a contract winemaker based at the estate, makes the wine for Albury and High Clandon, and for Chartham in Kent and Saffron Grange in Essex.

Greyfriars plants the south-facing chalk of the Hog’s Back at Puttenham. Away from the chalk the ground varies: Chilworth Manor grows on sandy loam over sandstone of the Hythe Formation, Godstone on Upper Greensand with large slabs of ragstone in it, and at Tanhurst, on Leith Hill, the geology changes from the greensand of the hill to the clay of the Weald. West Fisher, near Warlingham, is a winery rather than a vineyard: its grapes come from other growers, and it makes wine under contract for other small producers.

The group’s members sit within about 15 miles of one another, from Greyfriars near Guildford to Denbies near Dorking. Denbies is around a 15-minute walk from Dorking station, which has direct trains from London Waterloo and London Victoria.
