Calancombe is a vineyard, winery and restaurant in a South Hams valley, making still and sparkling wine, cyder and cassis from fruit grown on the estate.
Caroline and Lance Whitehead bought Calancombe in 2012. The estate lies in a valley in the South Hams, between Dartmoor and the coast, and its origins go back to the 16th century. The first vines went in that same year, and the first harvest came in 2017.
Visitors can drop in to taste and buy. The Super Taster is self-guided, at the restaurant tables or the bar, choosing wines, cyders or cassis from full tasting notes. The cheese and wine tasting and the vineyard tours are booked ahead. Spittoons are provided and drivers can have water instead.
The Calancombe Super Taster
The final mile to the estate is a narrow lane with limited passing places, used by horse riders, cyclists and runners. The estate asks visitors to approach from the east, via PL21 0HR, and to leave to the west towards Modbury. The car park is just outside the winery and restaurant.
