Gusbourne

Gusbourne

A Kent estate in Appledore growing all its own grapes for traditional-method sparkling and still wines, with a cellar door and a vineyard trail.

Gusbourne makes its wines only from grapes grown on its own vineyards, and around 60 hectares of them are planted in Appledore, Kent. The first vines went into Butness, named after the woods to its east, in May 2004. Several of the plot names record what stands, or once stood, around them. Commanders is named after a house built and owned by a naval commander, and the well that served it is still in the vineyard, capped off. Bottom Camp lies where a military camp once stood, and Mill Hill runs down to the Royal Military Canal at the southern border of the estate. Heartbreak was named for its rows, so long that the prospect of pruning them could break a heart.
