A regional portrait

England’s chalk heart — sparkling country, from Kent to Surrey.

On a Tuesday in late August the South East hums quietly with harvest — the chalk underfoot, the same band of cretaceous white that rises across the Channel as Champagne, runs through Kent, Sussex, Surrey, and on into Hampshire. It is the closest thing England has to a wine country in the European sense: a single geology spread across five counties, planted thickly enough that you can drive a weekend without ever leaving it.

It is also the most productive corner of the English wine map. More than 60% of Britain’s commercial vineyards sit within an hour’s drive of London, on south-facing slopes that stretch from the Kent marshes to the Meon valley. The estates here are old by English standards — Hambledon was planted in 1952 — and lately, world-class: Nyetimber, Gusbourne, Ridgeview and Rathfinny all pour bottles that beat their Champagne counterparts in blind tastings.

Practically, it makes the best first trip. The drives are short, the cellar doors are open, and a great many estates have rooms or restaurants on site. Pick a county and a base town — Tenterden, Lewes, Petersfield — and three or four estates will fall easily within reach.
