Henry's Marani
Henry's Marani
Henry's Marani is a Georgian qvevri winery and museum at Plumpton College in East Sussex, making white, orange and red wines in clay vessels buried in the ground.
Henry's Marani makes wine the Georgian way, in qvevri. These are cone-shaped clay vessels buried in the ground, into which the juice, skins, stalks and pips go together to be sealed and left to ferment for five to six months. UNESCO listed the method as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2013. Marani is the Georgian word for a wine cellar, and the estate describes itself as the first traditional Georgian qvevri museum and winery in the UK, established in 2017.
Cellar door tastings
Tastings come at the end of a booked tour at the Plumpton College wine department, pairing English and Georgian wines with cheese and biscuits. Groups run from six to 15, and the qvevri opening needs 15. The site describes no walk-in tasting.
