High Clandon
High Clandon
A Surrey Hills vineyard at East Clandon making vintage-only sparkling wine, with tastings and art in a Glass Barn that looks out to London.
High Clandon makes only vintage sparkling wine, and each cuvée spends at least five years maturing in bottle before release. The cuvées are made from the three classic Champagne grapes, with a high proportion of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. In the vineyard, the leaves around the fruit are stripped away and at least a quarter of the bunches are cut off while the grapes ripen, to concentrate what is left. The vines are on chalky limestone, on hills facing south-east. Sibylla and Bruce Tindale founded the estate in 2004. The wine is made by Matthieu Elzinga and John Worontschak of Litmus Wines.

From the A246, the turning is a sharp one into Blakes Lane, a small lane soon after Hatchlands when coming from the M25 side, or just as the double carriageway ends when coming from Guildford. The lane signed to Shere and Staples Lane just before it is the wrong road. Through the gates marked High Clandon, the vineyard entrance is 200 yards up the hill, the first gate on the left.
