Huxbear is a family-run vineyard and winery in Devon's Teign Valley, making still and sparkling wines almost entirely on solar power, with tours and tastings by appointment.
Ben and Lucy Hulland planted Huxbear in 2007, on 14 acres of south and south west facing slopes in the Teign Valley, just outside Chudleigh. A second planting in 2013 took the total to just over 15 acres, in two fields. One holds 9,500 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines that go into sparkling wine. The other holds a further 7,000 vines, Bacchus and Siegerrebe among them, from which both still and sparkling wines are made. None of the land is cultivated. The rows are grassed, wild flowers grow beneath the vines, and the fields are divided by hedgerow of blackthorn, gorse and dog rose. No broad spectrum pesticides are used, and the estate says the biodiversity this encourages keeps thrips and mites at a manageable level.
Visits are by appointment and there are no walk-in tastings. The tasting comes at the end of a vineyard tour, and a seated version presented in the bar area can be arranged for anyone with limited mobility. Groups under six adults may be combined or charged a minimum.
