Kenton Park Estate

A family-owned vineyard near the Exe estuary in Devon, with a bar and grill among the vines, booked wine tastings and guided vineyard tours.

Kenton Park Estate was once part of the Powderham Castle Estate. It lies close to Devon's Exe estuary, in the foothills of Haldon Forest, next door to Exeter Racecourse, and was first established as a wine estate in 2003. The family who own it moved in during January 2017, knowing nothing about winemaking or viticulture beforehand. On the advice of a consultant from a Bordeaux vineyard, their first task was to remove every old vine root from the site. Ploughing did not shift them, so a team of former Blundell's School rugby players spent a week pulling out roots spread over about 12 acres. A cover crop of mustard and other flowering plants followed before the new vines went in.

The Motley Cru Bar & Grill takes walk-ins, and visitors can taste the estate's wines there. Seated tastings of six wines, each paired with a canapé and led by a wine host, are booked and held in The Cooperage barn. Longer tours walk the vineyard and taste among the vines.

Getting there

Some sat navs lead to a private entrance about 400m short of the main one. A sign points the way: carry on up the hill, turn left at the crossroads, and the estate is the next entrance on the left, behind big stone walling. Buses from Exeter and Dawlish stop at the Kenton Triangle, about 1.5km from the estate along a country lane. From Exmouth, a ferry crosses to Starcross, and guests booked on a wine experience can ask well in advance to be collected from Starcross station.
