Knotfield Vines
Knotfield Vines is a two-acre, minimal-intervention vineyard above Rawdon, near Leeds, making small-batch traditional method sparkling wine from Seyval Blanc and Pinot Noir Précoce.
Knotfield Vines is a two-acre vineyard on a hillside above Rawdon, on the edge of Leeds, where farming has gone on for at least 900 years - the site appears in the Domesday Book of 1086. The vines sit at 180 metres, on a south-westerly, gently sloping aspect below Rawdon Billing, in clay loam soil over Leeds' limestone belt. The nearby River Aire draws cold air away from the vineyard, cutting frost risk.
A guided tour hosted by a member of the Knotfield team, tasting the vintage sparkling among the vines. Visits are intimate and by appointment only, with directions sent by welcome email beforehand. Because each vintage is a small batch, which wines are available to taste depends on stock on the day.
The sat-nav postcode brings you to the far corner of Horsforth Vale, where Low Hall Road meets the bottom of Knott Lane, a country track with a stream running alongside. From there it is a 200-metre walk or drive up to the vineyard, reached through a gravel drive and a gate with the Knotfield logo, just past the Chapel House. Knott Lane cannot be driven from Harrogate Road: a permanent barrier blocks it halfway down.
