Mountfield Winery

Mountfield Winery

Mountfield is a small East Sussex vineyard producing English sparkling wine, fermented partly in oak barrels and aged long-term on the lees, from vines planted in 2012.

Mountfield planted its vines in 2012 on a south-facing slope at Mountfield Court, chosen after comparing several sites across the estate for shelter from wind and frost and for mineral balance in the soil, which is greensand and clay over a sandstone bedrock, between 50 and 85 metres of altitude. The vineyard holds 5,000 vines of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, small enough, the estate says, to look after every plant individually; canopy management is labour-intensive, but the estate says it is how they get good fruit quality year after year.

Cellar door tastings

On open days, visitors wander the vines and the working winery at their own pace, then taste the sparkling range, served in the restored stables next to the house. No booking is needed on those days. Tours, picnics and special experiences are booked ahead.
