A family farm near Alresford growing grapes for sparkling wine, with a tasting barn overlooking the vineyard for flights, glasses and grazing boards.
Augusta Raimes is the fifth generation of her family to farm at Raimes, and the vines are one crop among several. The farm grows wheat, barley and oilseed rape, and its grassland is home to a herd of pedigree horned Hereford cattle. Together with land farmed on the Tichborne Estate, it stretches from the water meadows of the River Itchen to the hills of the South Downs near Winchester. The first 10 acres of vines were planted in 2011, on south-facing chalk slopes, and given over to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.
