Hardy country — chalk, hill forts, and the slow English vintage.
Wessex is the England that writes itself — hill forts, chalk figures, deep lanes between high hedgerows. Vineyards here are scattered, often on land that has grown wheat for two thousand years, planted by farmers who simply tried something different.
The region is small in production terms but rich in character. A few estates are doing serious work with sparkling on the chalk; others have leaned into still Bacchus and Pinot Gris. Tasting rooms tend to be barns; tours tend to be given by owners.
Best done as a long-weekend road trip — base in Salisbury or Sherborne and drive the lanes. Pubs are essential to the day plan.
