Smock Alley Wines
Smock Alley is a co-operative vineyard in West Chiltington, West Sussex, worked by 62 volunteer row-holders, its wine made under contract by Wiston Estate.
Smock Alley's vineyard was planted in 2000 in West Chiltington, at Southlands Valley, and has been owned by the Lavery family since 2014. Sarah Lavery took it on as a retirement project after 35 years in civil engineering and flood-risk management, work that had shown her how the climate was pushing the ripening line for grapes north into southern counties such as Sussex. She added a further 3,000 vines, doubling the plot to its present two hectares.
Visitors can drop in to the Cellar Door shop at the vineyard in West Chiltington without booking, taste the Wine of the Week and chat with Sarah and the team. The guided vineyard walk with a tutored tasting of three sparkling wines is booked ahead, as are gift-voucher wine flights.
