Wellhayes Vineyard

Wellhayes is a small Devon vineyard making a single traditional-method sparkling wine from its own vines, with a vertical tasting across vintages and a concert series through the year.

Simon and Alison Routh planted the first 150 vines at Wellhayes by hand in May 2008, five rows split evenly between Reichensteiner, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Bacchus, to test whether the ground would suit them before committing further. It did. By 2011 the vineyard had grown to a full hectare and 2,500 vines, on a south-facing slope on the edge of the Brendon Hills, in red Devonian soil over shillet, deep and free-draining, with roots that go straight down.
