Monmouthshire’s growers build wineries of their own.
For 14 years, White Castle Vineyard, at Llanvetherine, picked its grapes by hand and took them across the border to Three Choirs at Newent, in Gloucestershire, to be made into wine. In 2024 it made its first vintage in a winery of its own, Y Gwindy. In September 2024 the Abergavenny Chronicle reported that four new vineyards around Llanvetherine — O’r Tir, Newhouse Farm, Gelli and Dewin — would build a winery together, each sending its grapes there and making its own style, and that Abergavenny Vineyards planned a winery too.
The Dell, on a farm near Raglan that has been in the family since the late 1800s, credits the Three Choirs winery team with Y Lleidr, the rosé named Best Overall Still Wine in Wales at the 2025 Welsh Wine Awards.
The county’s modern vineyards go back to 1979, when Parva Farm was planted on a hillside just above the A466 in Tintern. Its vines face south on a steep slope at about 50 metres, and the estate holds that good south-facing sites are few and far between in the area, which is why it believes the slope was almost certainly Tintern Abbey’s vineyard, if not a Roman one. The Chronicle’s writer described the county’s low hills, whose slopes shed rain, and its ground of shale, limestone, sandstone and clay.
The vineyards gather in the east of the county: Parva Farm in the Wye Valley at Tintern, The Dell near Raglan, and White Castle and Sugarloaf near Abergavenny, Sugarloaf on the south-facing slopes of the mountain it is named after, planted from 1992.
