Vines in the home of cider.
Herefordshire’s tourism board calls the county the home of cider, and some of its vineyards grow among the fruit. Frome Valley keeps a cider orchard alongside its vines. At White Heron, the vineyard is the newest crop on a farm the Green family has worked since 1863, known for the blackcurrants in its British Cassis, and the sparkling wine is made by the Charmat method, the tank process used for prosecco.
The county’s wine has a written history. In 1276 the Bishop of Hereford recorded vines planted on the south-facing slopes of Ledbury, and 1276 has put vines back on the same site.
Several of its growers work by hand, without the usual sprays. Black Mountain, between Hereford and Hay-on-Wye, plants clay loam over old red sandstone, is certified organic, makes its wine in an off-grid winery, and makes wine for other small Herefordshire producers too; Hands Off, near Ross-on-Wye, farms without fungicide or insecticide.
The rest sit mainly in the south and east of the county: Wythall Estate near Ross-on-Wye, Furnace Projects at St Weonards, and Frome Valley at Bishops Frome, with Lyde Arundel near Hereford and White Heron near Kington.
