Birmingham’s winery works under a railway arch. Midland Press, which Glass of Bubbly called the city’s first urban winery in February 2026, sits beneath the arches in Digbeth, and the arch holds a steady temperature for the wine fermenting inside it. Richard Stenton founded the business in 2024.
The grapes come from growers across the middle of England, and the arch is where they become wine. Two of its reds come from neighbouring parcels of an early clone of Pinot Noir in North Worcestershire: the 2024 Silent Crowd was fermented with indigenous yeasts and spent 10 months in used French oak, while the 2025 Outer City Limits red went through three weeks of carbonic maceration at a cool, constant temperature inside the arch.
Some of the vines are decades older than the winery. Verse, a col fondo, is made entirely from a plot of Reichensteiner planted in 1990 outside Bishop’s Frome, in Herefordshire, and Midland Press calls it an ode to the heritage grape varieties planted by the pioneers of British viticulture. Its sourcing also takes in hybrid varieties with a long history of small-scale planting across the Midlands.
The wine is fermented in barrels or small tanks, blended by hand from small batches, and bottled by hand in the arch, unfined and unfiltered.
