West · A county portrait

Cold-climate grapes by the Severn, Pinot Noir on the hills.

When the Bache family planted Astley in 1971, it was said to be the most northerly vineyard in the world, and the family researched which grape varieties would stand a cold climate. The vineyard grows on Triassic sandstone loam, half a mile from the River Severn, near Stourport-on-Severn.

The county’s growers have since planted grapes the Baches did not. Deer Park, on the northern flank of Bredon Hill, put its first vine in the ground in 2016 and has proved able to ripen Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, varieties the estate says would not typically ripen this far north; it has planted more of both and cut back the cooler-climate Solaris and Seyval Blanc it started with. Just east of the Malvern Hills, Marlbank’s manager found marl soils he compared with Burgundy’s and planted Pinot Noir in a field where apples and pears used to grow.

Grapes cross the hills to be made into wine. Marlbank’s go to Three Choirs, over the Gloucestershire border, and so do those of Easing Hill, above the Teme Valley, which travel 21 miles over the Malverns; Abberley Hills, on a fruit farm near Great Witley, has its wine made by Halfpenny Green. Marlbank and Two Beacons belong to the Malvern Hills Vineyards, a group of six formed in 2025 across Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire.

Two Beacons, planted in 2018 between the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Beacons, pours its wine in a walk-in tasting room in the centre of Great Malvern. Hanley is on the edge of the Teme Valley, and Plantation House grows Rondo and Regent, hybrids chosen for disease resistance.
