Breaky Bottom Vineyard
Breaky Bottom Vineyard
A family-run vineyard in a chalk valley of the South Downs near Lewes, making sparkling wine with Seyval Blanc as its principal grape. Wine is sold from the cellar door by appointment.
Breaky Bottom was a pig farm before it was a vineyard. Peter Hall and his first wife Diana took on the valley, and the first vines were planted in 1974. The pigs left the following year and the sheep stayed. They graze the steep banks around the six acres of vines, and the hillsides are species-rich chalk downland, supported by Natural England through its Higher Level Stewardship Scheme. Christina Hall, a partner in the business, hosts visits from local schools to share that countryside and its wildlife.
Cellar door tastings
Breaky Bottom is the family's home as well as a vineyard, and it offers no tours or tastings, so walk-in tastings are not available. Visits are by appointment only, for buying and collecting wine at the cellar door, arranged through the contact form or by phone.
