Fairmile Vineyard
Fairmile is a Henley-on-Thames vineyard whose maiden 2015 vintage Decanter rated England's only Outstanding sparkling white.
Jan and Anthea Mirkowski recognised in 2011 that the Stonor Valley, where it opens into Henley-on-Thames, had the terrain and microclimate for a vineyard: a south-facing slope below the 100-metre altitude line that matters for English viticulture, catching 30% more late-summer sun than level ground, with spring frosts draining downhill away from the vines. In 2013 they planted Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, 12,000 rootstocks across three hectares, set out by GPS-guided machinery, and picked the first harvest in 2015.
Wine cellar door shop is open regularly, with booking recommended via phone or email for tastings and tours. Terrace is available to purchase wine by the bottle all year round, just call ahead to check times.
Buses on the A4130 stop either side of the vineyard entrance. The road is part of the Chilterns Cycleway, and boats that moor in Henley are about a mile's walk away.
