Eight wineries within easy reach of London by public transport

Eight wineries to visit from London by public transport, each within 90 minutes of a terminal on a Saturday morning.

Who says visiting a vineyard needs to be difficult? We have put together a list of eight easily accessible wineries and vineyards that are an easy day-out from London. Each of the eight wineries here is within 90 minutes of a London terminal by train, or by train and one bus, with no more than 35 minutes on foot. These offer a nice walk alongside easy train journeys from major London stations, and most are available all year round. There is no excuse not to visit...

The Mount

  1. The Mount1

    The Mount

    Kent

49 min from London Bridge · 14 min on foot

A tasting at The Mount pours a selection of the estate's wines beside a cheeseboard, while a host explains the English wine industry and how The Mount's wine is made. Nearly 13,000 vines went in here in 2004, in seven varieties; two acres of Chardonnay added in 2011 made it eight, across 10 acres. The estate also runs a courtyard restaurant and bar.

  2. Woodvalley2

    Woodvalley

    Essex

57 min from London Liverpool Street · 10 min on foot

Four friends with no farming background planted Woodvalley in 2022, starting with what the vineyard describes as the last 400 vines available in the UK: 200 Chardonnay and 200 Pinot Noir, every one planted by hand. Its first wine is a rosé from the 2025 harvest; a sparkling wine from the same harvest is planned for release in March 2027. The cellar door also stocks guest wines from other Essex vineyards.

  3. Forty Hall3

    Forty Hall

    Greater London

62 min from London Liverpool Street · 30 min on foot

Forty Hall is a 10-acre community vineyard in Enfield, run as a social enterprise and looked after largely by local volunteers. It is certified organic, on Capel Manor College's Forty Hall Farm, a 170-acre organic mixed farm. The wine is sold in the farm shop, and the vineyard can be walked on a self-guided tour when the farm is open.

  4. Bailey Hills4

    Bailey Hills

    Hertfordshire

66 min from London Liverpool Street · 22 min on foot

The Ford family planted their first vines at Bailey Hills in 2018, and in September 2025 released three sparkling wines from the 2021 and 2022 vintages, made in a winery they built next to the vines. The tasting room has floor-to-ceiling windows and a terrace, beside the vineyard. The tour is a walk among the vines, a look into the winery and a tasting flight.

  5. Chartham5

    Chartham

    Kent

70 min from London St Pancras · 5 min on foot

Chartham is part of Burnt House Farm, in the same family for 70 years, where the vineyard was started in 2013. It is not the first at Chartham: a vineyard there is recorded in 1303, set up by Prior Henry of Canterbury Cathedral. The shop is in a renovated former cow shed, beside an art gallery, a 17th-century brick barn and an ancient dovecote next to a demonstration vineyard. A guided tour with co-owner Richard or vineyard manager Andy ends in a tutored tasting of still and sparkling wines.

  6. Fairmile6

    Fairmile

    Oxfordshire

80 min from London Paddington · 33 min on foot

Fairmile planted 12,000 rootstocks across three hectares in 2013, on a steep south-facing slope where the Stonor Valley enters Henley, and picked its first harvest in 2015. A tour takes the group into the vineyard to show the vine's year and how the wine is made, then walks up to a seating area at the top of the slope for a tutored tasting of the sparkling rosé and Classic Cuvée. Afterwards a chilled bottle can be bought to drink in the vineyard.

  7. Denbies Wine Estate7

    Denbies Wine Estate

    Surrey

83 min from London Waterloo · 30 min on foot

The White family planted the first vines at Denbies in 1986, on south-facing slopes with chalk-rich soils; the chateau-style winery followed in 1993. The estate, in Dorking, now covers 380 acres, 265 of them under vine. A tasting pours a selection of the estate's wines while explaining the vineyard and how the wine is made, and an outdoor tour through the vines ends in a tasting of the sparkling wines. A vineyard train climbs to the highest points of the vineyard, with views across Dorking, and seven miles of public footpaths cross the vineyard.

  8. Westwell8

    Westwell

    Kent

90 min from London St Pancras · 35 min on foot

Westwell is a small, family-run estate winery at Charing, bought in 2017. It grows and makes everything on site, and its tours walk the vineyard and go behind the scenes of low-intervention winemaking. The cellar door, bar and shop serves local charcuterie and cheese plates, with food trucks at weekends.
