Galleywood Vineyard

An Essex vineyard at Galleywood, with a gravity-fed winery in a watermill-style building, offering booked tours, tastings and afternoon teas.

Galleywood's winery is built in the style of a watermill, chosen to reflect the county's agricultural heritage and its inland waterways. Its high ceilings and several storeys made it suited to a gravity-feed winery. A 1950s Coquard press, sourced from the Champagne region and overhauled, sits in a raised position where the system begins. The juice runs into two receiver tanks, and once it has settled the tanks are raised so that it flows by gravity into temperature-controlled fermentation vats.
