In a Hampshire village on the river Anton, one acre of chalk-slope vines is turned into wine under contract in Staffordshire, with bespoke tastings by appointment.
Mark and Cecilia Haszlakiewicz decided to plant when Mark was around seventy, after his wife urged him not to leave it any longer. They took soil samples first, and settled on a south-facing slope with enough topsoil over solid chalk, on one acre by the river Anton in the Hampshire village of Goodworth Clatford, planting Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier for a traditional-method sparkling wine.
Visits are bespoke and by appointment only, arranged directly with the vineyard — there's no walk-in cellar door. A visit runs to about 90 minutes: a welcome glass, a walk through the vines explaining the growing year, then a seated tasting of the current wines.
