Herbert Hall Winery and Vineyard
Herbert Hall is a small, organic vineyard on the edge of Marden, Kent, planted by a winemaker returning to farmland worked by his own great-grandfather.
Herbert Hall arrived in the village of Marden at the end of the 19th century as a tenant farmer. He worked a sunny, gently sloping ten-acre plot to the west of the village, growing hops, apples, pears and plums, and the farm stayed with the Hall family for three generations after him. In 2007 his great-grandson, winemaker Nicholas Hall, chose that same plot to plant a vineyard, on land Herbert himself always said was the best he had farmed.
Cellar door tastings
Bar HH, at the winery itself, is a walk-in seasonal bar serving the estate's own wines alongside other drinks. If the regular hours don't suit, a check of the vineyard's social media is worthwhile, as opening is weather dependent.
