Ambriel — image 1
1 / 3

Ambriel is a single-estate sparkling wine producer near Pulborough in West Sussex, with its winery set in the middle of its own greensand vineyard.

Ambriel is run by Charles and Wendy Outhwaite, who came to wine from banking and the bar. Wendy grows the grapes and Charles ferments them, and the two of them blend together, tasting blind. Everything happens on the estate. The winery stands in the middle of the vineyard, takes only its own Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, and makes wine for nobody else, so no grapes or wine leave until they are sold. Each clone is fermented separately, in stainless steel or oak barrels, and the wines then rest on their lees for years.

Getting there

On Nutbourne Lane, ignore the brown vineyard sign pointing left, which leads to other vineyards, and do not turn into Gay Street. Carry straight on up the hill, where the road narrows between steep sides, and turn left at the top into Redfold Vineyards. The track runs through the vines to grey buildings, where visitors park. Taxis must be booked ahead, as the stations have no rank.
